Abstract
In the Philippines, cultural familial values characterized by strong bonds and respect
for elders are commonly practiced and observed over time. Every family has distinct
problems and stressful life events such as increased familial conflicts, academic pressures,
and arguments at home, are commonly identified sources of problems. (Javier et. al., 2019)
With the support of Bowen’s Family Systems Theory, it is understood that families are
emotionally and intergenerationally connected. Implying that if anything happens to any
individual in a family unit, it may have a positive or negative effect on other members, such
as influencing their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This study explored the perspectives
of millennial parents only towards their Gen Z children, and identified the challenges they
faced and its consequences on intergenerational relationships specifically with the presence
of technology. The study also identified their coping strategies and formulated a familial
intervention plan to improve family engagement and better handle family challenges.
As the study utilized a Qualitative Phenomenological design, the researchers also
applied a purposive sampling method to yield better matching of the participants to answer
the objectives of this research based on a specific criteria. Using a validated questionnaire,
data collection is conducted through face to face and online interviews, at a convenient time
for the participants, upon agreeing to the data collection guidelines such as informed
consent and liability forms. The target participants for the study are ten (10) Millennial
parents with a Gen-Z child, who commonly experienced problems within the family, and
reside within the province of Cavite. The researchers utilized Braun and Clarke’s Manual
Thematic Analysis for each story that has been gathered.
The results achieved a total of twelve (12) main themes from the collected data. The
themes are namely: (1) Emotional Expression on Social Media, (2) Declining Filipino Cultural
Value, (3) Comparisons on Social Interactions, (4) Filipino Familial Challenges, (5)
Generational Experiences in Self-Expression, (6) Safeguarding Child’s Emotional Wellbeing,
(7) Fostering Family Inclusivity, (8) Limited Child Involvement to Family Problems, (9)
Parental Initiatives to Open Communication, (10) Seeking Social Support, (11) Family
Discussion, and (12) Making Efforts to Strengthen Family Bond.
Through these findings, the researchers formulated the A.R.M Project, an
intervention plan that will serve as a foundation for addressing family challenges. It aims to
address familial issues, resolve family gaps and barriers, and maintain good family
relationships through action-based interventions that can be done at the family’s
convenience.
