Abstract
CORDERO, JOSHUA V. The Influence of Media on Public Perception Towards Criminality. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Criminology.Cavite State University – Bacoor City Campus. August 2025. Adviser: Mr. Heherson A. Balais. This study evaluates the wide impact that media outlets have on public criminality understanding in the setting of Barangay Molino VI in Bacoor City, Cavite. Media framing combined with sensationalized and biased reporting affects how people think towards criminality. Through qualitative research analysis with phenomenological design the study collects detailed interview responses from residents together with barangay officials and police officers. Media exercises significant sway over public crime awareness because its sensational reporting as well as biased coverage results in exaggerated pictures of crime severity. Public fear and anxiety rise because the media presents exaggerated violent crime reports together with unethical reporting and misinformation. People handle crime-related news by using credible information sources while analyzing diverse reports along with participating responsibly in crime news content. The research relies on framing theory combined with agenda-setting theory and cultivation theory to step up understanding of media influence. The research encompasses foreign academic investigations of media impact on public perception and crime misinformation alongside reporting sensationalization techniques. The local academic body identifies news media as essential for dissemination of information while acknowledging their application of framing approaches.
