This study was conducted to determine the relationship between Sleep Deprivation
and Empathy among Nurses in Tertiary Hospitals. Specifically, it aims to describe the [1] levels
of sleep deprivation, [2] level of empathy, and the [3] significant relationship between these
variables among nurses in Tertiary Hospitals within Metro Manila, Philippines. Using Slovin’s
formula and simple random sampling, the researchers gathered 100 registered nurses for this
correlational study. Results showed that fifty-seven (57%) of the total number of respondents
are ‘Sometimes’ (21 - 42) sleep deprived and forty-nine percent (49%) have a level of 'Low’ (0
- 32) in their empathy.
Research findings indicate that there is no significant relationship between sleep
deprivation and empathy; based on the analysis with a statistician using Pearson’s R
interpretation (r = -0.051 is within ±0.01 to ±0.20). There is little or no evidence against the null
hypothesis. It shows that sleep deprivation does not have significance in relation to the
empathy of nurses in tertiary referral hospitals in Metro Manila. Further, researchers found out
that most nurses preferred to answer through online survey questionnaires, which according
to some nursing departments always had erratic schedules. Primary information was collected
from nurses for their personal understanding or reflection. Implementing empathy, sympathy,
and compassion can significantly influence patient care. The study is beneficial to the
hospitals, healthcare professionals, and community.
Description
This quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between sleep deprivation and empathy among 100 registered nurses working in tertiary hospitals in Metro Manila. Findings revealed that most nurses reported moderate levels of sleep deprivation and low levels of empathy, but statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between the two variables (r = -0.051). The study highlights the importance of empathy, compassion, and patient-centered care while recommending further research on factors that may influence nurses’ emotional capacity and well-being.
