Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of working while studying on the academic performance of Criminology students at Cavite State University – Bacoor City Campus. Specifically, it seeks to identify how employment impacts the academic outcomes of these students. The study investigates the challenges faced by students who work while studying, explores the coping mechanisms they use, and determines how these factors influence their performance in criminology courses.

A qualitative method, specifically a transcendental phenomenological approach, was employed to capture the essence of the participants’ lived experiences. This approach focuses on understanding the unique experiences of individuals through in-depth interviews. The participants were working criminology students from Cavite State University – Bacoor City Campus. Respondents were selected based on specific criteria, and their responses were validated by the Ethics Board before inclusion in the study.

Findings from SOP 1 revealed themes that describe the difficulties of balancing work and academics. These included time management challenges, financial constraints, and the emotional stress of managing dual responsibilities. SOP 2 findings, gathered from those who experienced negative effects, identified themes such as academic distraction, absenteeism, and decreased motivation. Meanwhile, SOP 3 findings from those who experienced positive effects highlighted themes like financial independence, maturity, and improved time management skills.

The study concludes that working while studying can have both positive and negative impacts, depending on the student's coping strategies and support systems. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend that working students create a timetable, plan ahead, submit their class schedule to their employer, and keep study sessions focused but brief for better academic outcomes.
