Abstract
TERNIDA, CAROL HERRERA. “Growth Analysis of the Philippine Manufacturing Industry.” B.S. Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Economics, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2011. Adviser: Mr. Danilo V. Jeciel.
A study was conducted to analyze the growth of the Philippine manufacturing industry from 1980 to 1999. Specifically, the study aimed to assess the performance of the manufacturing industry; ascertain the factors affecting the performance of the industry; and forecast the Gross Value Added of the manufacturing industry.
Secondary data from the 1980 to 1999 were used in the study. Data were obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), National Statistics Office (NSO) and University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P). Data were analyzed using growth and regression analysis.
The results of the analysis showed that the trend in the Gross Value Added of the manufacturing industry from 1980 to 1999 was increasing. The GVA reached a record-breaking mark of P644,009M, the highest level ever to be reached within 20 years throughout the whole period. The value added of the manufacturing industry has increased by 13.16 percent.
In terms of percentage contribution to Gross Domestic Product, the highest share noted in 1985. Meanwhile, the lowest share to Gross Domestic Product by the industry was recorded in 192 at 21.49 percent. For the period, the rate of increase by manufacturing industry was -0.61 percent.
Similarly, percentage share of the manufacturing industry to the Gross National Product followed a downward trend. In 1985, the highest share of 27.30 percent was achieved and the lowest share was noted in 1999. It had an average share of 24.12 percent for the past 20 years.
Moreover, the employment has grown at 1.66 percent for the 20 years. It was highest in 1999 with 1,273,58 7 employees. The lowest level of employment was achieved in 1985 with only 623,671 employees.
Factors significantly affecting (P<0.05) the manufacturing growth were population and employment. Other explanatory variables such as number of manufacturing establishments and investment were found not significant.
The result of the regression analysis for the estimated Gross Value Added of the manufacturing industry exhibited a positive relationship with time.
Based on the results of the study, the manufacturing sector will be a great help to enhance the growth and development of the economy. The government and other private agencies should also extend help to small and medium scale industries by access to financing in order to expand their production capacities. Filipino businessmen should be encouraged to put up their own manufacturing plants to contribute to the growth and development of the country.
