Abstract
The study presents HERBLIFE, an innovative Android application designed to
assist users in identifying and learning about common herbal medicinal plants in the
CALABARZON region of the Philippines. The application utilizes image processing
techniques to analyze and classify plant images, providing users with accurate plant
identification and comprehensive information on their medicinal properties.
The development of HERBLIFE required specific software and hardware
components. The software stack includes Android 11 Oreo Studio, OpenCV library for
image processing, and TensorFlow for deep learning algorithms. The hardware
requirements involve an Android smartphone or tablet with a minimum of 2GB RAM,
a 45-megapixel camera or higher, and internet connectivity for real-time updates and
additional resources.
The methodology employed in the study is the 4th Generation Technique
encompasses four main stages: Requirements Gathering, Design Strategy,
Implementation using 4Gt, and Testing. The study consists of 3 modules Record
Module, Image Processing Module, and Herb Information Module. An extensive
dataset of CALABARZON herbal medicinal plants was compiled, consisting of high-
resolution images captured from various sources. The image processing module
involved pre-processing techniques, feature extraction, and deep learning models for
plant classification. The herb information module included plant characteristics, such
as common name, habitat, traditional uses, and potential adverse effects.
The scope of the study focuses on the CALABARZON region and its 50
common indigenous herbal medicinal plants. The evaluation of the HERBLIFE
application involved user surveys and feedback analysis. Preliminary results indicate
a high accuracy rate in plant identification with total rating of 4.45 rating and verbal
interpreting of Excellent, with users expressing satisfaction with the application's user-
friendly interface and extensive information provided.
Based on the evaluation, recommendations for future improvements include
expanding the geographical scope to include other regions in the Philippines,
enhancing the image processing algorithms for better accuracy, and making it
available in any cross platforms,
The HERBLIFE application serves as a valuable tool for individuals interested
in exploring the rich herbal medicinal plants of CALABARZON. By combining image
processing techniques and comprehensive plant information, the application
contributes to the promotion and preservation of traditional knowledge and the
sustainable use of herbal resources in the region.
